Work Note:
This photo was taken in 2016 when I was visiting family. As I was preparing to leave my aunt said, “have you said goodbye to grandpa? This may be the last time you see him.” He had left to go home a few minutes earlier. I said, ”Oh, I will be back from Christmas in a few months. I can see him them.” she took a short pause, her eyes shifting and filled with a soft sincerity. Then in a quiet tone she repeated, “This may be the last time you see him.” I felt the clarity of that message and what she was saying so I immediately grabbed my camera and went down and took this photo of him. I never did see him again so that moment was all the time I had left to capture one of my heros.
It possibly the most important photo I’ve ever taken. I have always felt so connected to my grandpa which is strange because we never really talked or spent much time together but there was an unspoken connection. He showed me how to be a good man. Not by what he said, but by how he lived his life and shared kind positive energy wherever he went. It also speaks to my foundation phrase for the collection and everything I have created in the decade of art, “when you feel inspired, you have to act.” That day I felt the inspiration and acted. That is my aim every day I am alive.
